Cryptocurrency Theft Nears $1Billion

Cryptocurrency

CBJ — Hacking has led to almost $1 billion in cryptocurrency theft over the past nine months, which is up 250% from the same time period last year when about $266 million was pilfered.

It’s estimated $927 million was stolen this year according to a report by U.S.-based cyber security firm CipherTrace.

Bitcoin’s popularity and the emergence of more than 1,600 other digital coins or tokens have drawn more hackers into the cryptocurrency space, expanding opportunities for crime and fraud.
