ITW Construction Products

Advanced products for professionals and diy-ers alike

Located in Markham, Ontario, ITW Construction Products is a division of ITW Canada—a wholly owned subsidiary of Illinois Tool Works, Inc. (ITW).

To give a small background on its parent company, ITW was founded nearly 100 years ago in 1912. As a Fortune 200 diversified manufacturing company, ITW consists of 650 decentralized business units in 45 countries and employs nearly 47,500 people. ITW designs and produces highly engineered fasteners and components, equipment and consumables systems, and a variety of specialty products and equipment for customers around the world.

Spanning over eight decades, ITW Construction Products is an amalgamation of strategic acquisitions. Their brand names include Paslode, Duo-Fast, Buildex, Ramset and Red Head—all of which are recognized and trusted by industry professionals and DIYers across the country.

• Buildex, acquired in 1967, manufactures high-quality fasteners, developing innovative products for the metal building industry, roofing industry, EIFS market and for general construction.
• ITW’s acquisition of Ramset/Red Head expanded their concrete anchoring offering. Ramset/Red Head is America’s largest designer and manufacturer of fastening products used in concrete and steel construction.
• Paslod—leading manufacturer of cordless and pneumatic nailers, staplers, and fasteners for wood-to-wood construction—was added in 1992, to bring in a wood fastening product line.
• Finally, Duo-Fast also makes coil and strip nailers, as well as pneumatic, electric and manual staplers, and was acquired in 1999 to round out the wood fastening offering.

ITW Construction Products, like its parent company, is committed to offering its customers the most advanced products as well as the best in service, merchandising, training and sales support. ITW strives to excel at serving all builders with professionalgrade brands that are market leaders in quality, performance and ease of use.

Managing growth
ITW Construction Products has grown in size and reputation to become an innovative and leading supplier of cost-effective fastening systems and consumables for the construction industry. When any business expands, it requires the mechanisms in place to support the growth. That’s why ITW Construction Products uses specialised software, called SYSPRO, to provide the tools to deal with the demands of a growing customer base.

Their software provides flexibility to expand and consolidate divisions as the changes in the business climate dictate. The company’s revenues have been able to grow at double digit rates without an increase in customer service or inventory management staff.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is mandatory for the efficient exchange of information with customers such as Canadian Tire, Home Depot, RONA and Home Hardware—which is where you can find ITW products. EDI speeds the receipt of purchase orders, the dispatching of advance ship notifications and invoices. ITW Construction Products also has nearperfect inventory accuracy. The company has numerous production lines running fasteners on a 24/7 basis. The challenge of running a business is using the absolute minimum of resources tied up in staff, stock, warehouse space and so on. The EDI system knows what the promised delivery dates are on sales orders, the expected delivery dates for purchase orders and the expected lead times for receiving new stock.

Continued growth
ITW Construction Products has the goal to add 20 per cent growth to the bottom line each year while doubling business every five years. Removing bottlenecks and barriers from their business processes has allowed the company to exploit strategic leavers in the marketplace to achieve extraordinary growth
over the last several decades.
