Shaping Toronto’s construction industry

In 2001, John Miolla created the Artisan Group Inc., the Toronto-based independent construction management firm. Well known within the GTA’s construction industry, Miolla has over 35 years’ of experience work on hotels, condominiums and office building construction.

Miolla earned his Bachelor of Applied Science, Civil Engineering & Construction Management and Master’s Degree in Engineering & Construction Management from the University of Toronto, and is also accredited with LEED and CCA Gold Seal Certified Project Management, as well as having ADR accreditation. His reputation for being a cost- efficient and effective leader has been fostered from an intimate knowledge of the many moving parts of a construction project having worked in the Site supervision and Construction Management positions.

Premiere work in the GTA

Miolla’s work has changed the fabric of Toronto’s cityscape.  One of his early projects was the flatiron Novotel Toronto Centre Hotel and Condominiums. One of his recent as a Construction Manager was 29-storey One St. Thomas, one of the country’s pre-eminent luxury condominium residences in the Yorkville district of Toronto. On all his projects, Miolla is sought out by developers who want their build to go efficiently, on budget, and on time. This requires Miolla to keep his eyes on the multitude of moving parts from managing the construction team to managing the logistics of doing builds in high-density, urban areas.
Artisan Group Inc. takes a “hands on” approach to managing both large and small projects and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the construction process, resulting in the consistent completion of successful projects. “I believe we can distinguish ourselves from the competition quite easily with the wealth of experience,” says Miolla. “Our track record on working with trade contractors; coming in on budget and within the time schedule speaks for itself.”

Miolla decided to step out on his own when the opportunity arose on the Perspective condominium development at Scarlett Road and Eglinton Avenue West in Etobicoke. The 291-unit residential and commercial mixed-used building includes 12 and 19 storey towers over a three-level parking garage.
The $70 million construction job started in March, 2013, and was a milestone for Miolla and his two associates , Neil Wakil, P. Eng., and Calvin Chan, P. Eng. The new development has an impeccable address, overlooking the South Humber River and Valley, and offers “the ultimate town and country environment”, with miles of trails winding down to Lake Ontario, and has been an exemplary project on which to start this new chapter in Miolla’s career.

To a large degree because of Miolla’s decades of experience, the Perspective Condos project is off to an auspicious start. “Building is not just about bricks and mortar,” says Miolla. “It’s about managing people. Construction is crude; it is labour intensive, and requires top notch communication skills to coordinate the many people, consultants, architects, engineers and other companies to work together as a team to get the project done efficiently.”

“We have to be cognizant of the fact that our trade contractors and developers need to make a profit. If we run effectively and efficiently, everyone will come out a winner in the end, developers will have enhanced their reputation for building a quality product, and, ultimately, consumers will have a beautiful new residence.”
Going forward, the Artisan Group Inc. will continue to seek out new opportunities in condominium, commercial and hospitality buildings sectors, striving to delivering exceptional results for developers, owners and end users alike.

“It is an incredible feeling to contribute to some of Toronto’s landmark buildings,” says Miolla. “Each one has a unique personality, set of challenges, budget, design and space and it is rewarding to bring those altogether.”
