Baird Resigns From Politics
CBJ – At the age of 45, John Baird has decided it’s time to move on with another chapter in his life and has resigned from cabinet as Canada’s foreign affairs minister.
“I will miss this place very much, and many of the people in it on all sides,” Baird told the House of Commons Tuesday morning. He received a lengthy ovation from his fellow MPs.
“But the time has come for me to start a new chapter in my life.”
Baird told the House that he will “stand down” as foreign affairs minister and will not run in the new Ottawa area riding of Nepean. He will also resign his MP seat.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper was one of the first to walk over and offer an embrace.
It’s not yet known what will be next for Baird, although several international opportunities are there for the taking along with a number of private-sector positions.
