CBJ — It comes as somewhat of a surprise but the Canadian economy lost 88,000 jobs in January, with a large number of the losses concentrated in part-time work.

The drop in employment is the largest one-month decline since 2009 and pushed the national jobless rate up 0.1% to 5.9%.

Statistics Canada reports that part-time employment declined by 137,000 while full-time employment grew by 49,000.
