CBJ — China’s exports and imports both took large hits last month due to the COVID-19 pandemic and trade tensions that were ratcheted up with the United States.

Exports of Chinese goods were down 3.3% compared to May, 2019 to just under $207 billion. Imports were off by a huge 17% to $144 billion.

The economic shock sent the Asian country’s trade surplus up to $62.9 billion. The surplus with the United States reached $27.9 billion.
