DW Builders

Welcome to Your New Home

Kamloops, B.C.-based DW Builders is an industry leader in new home construction and renovation. Beginning in 1980, DW Builders has established a reputation for quality constructions in serving Greater Kamloops and the surrounding area. The company covers all facets of the building industry, including new residential and commercial sectors, as well as renovations within each.

The hallmark of any DW Builders project ties passion with creativity. That’s why the company has been recognized across the industry many times over the years, receiving several prestigious awards honouring projects in both the single family and multi-family residential building categories. The company is also Build Green registered, and each of its residential projects meets the Green Gold standard.

The company website reads, “With our over 30 years of experience, dedication to project completion and attention to quality, DW Builders is the best choice for commercial construction. As with all projects we complete, one of our most important assets is that we listen to and understand the developer or building owners’ needs, suggest ideas based on our experience, then establish a plan going forward … Like our homes, our company is built on a solid foundation of honesty, integrity, knowledge and professionalism.”

Most recently, DW Builders has managed several major commercial projects. One example is its newly constructed office space for Arrow Transportation, a major trucking organization with corporate presence in the Kamloops area. Also on the commercial side, DW Builders continues to work alongside a long-time client in A&W Restaurants, involved in several renovation projects with the restaurant chain.

In the residential field, DW Builders recently completed a major project at Cortland Park, a 64-unit townhouse couplex in Kamloops. Similar projects like the Golf Ridge Townhouse project at the Sun Rivers Development were also completed. Currently, DW Builders is working on a development permit application for a similar project of a new gated community in the Aberdeen area of Kamloops.

Mark Poulsen, Vice-President of DW Builders, told The Canadian Business Journal, “The key right now is that we’re moving more toward multi-family construction with less emphasis on single family homes as we believe this is the demographic of what is happening across Canada, and certainly in our area. A major focus is to grow the multi-family side of our business and to expand the commercial aspect of this business.”

Always Active

The Canadian economy and, more specifically, the residential construction sector felt the recessionary pinch of recent years. Fortunately, economic uncertainty wasn’t as tight in Western Canada, and DW Builders as a result stayed active during that time.

Poulsen summarized, “We have been very fortunate. Our market here in B.C. went into a soft patch from about fall of 2008 through to the summer of 2009, but then it really turned around. We had so much work on our plate when it hit that we stayed busy right through that soft patch, and then we really came up running again in the summer, so it really didn’t affect us as much.”

While Poulsen operates the residential and new construction side of DW Builders, company president Doug Wittal oversees the commercial developments and renovations category. Poulsen said, “Rather than one person overseeing the whole operation, we have key staff in place so we always have our feet wet and we’re dialed into all the facets of construction.”

Poulsen and Wittal are both members of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA), the former a past local board member for several years. Both are past presidents of the CHBA, while Wittal has also recently completed a two-year term as CHBA provincial president. Poulsen and Wittal keep involved in the industry with a finger to the pulse of what’s happening across British Columbia’s construction sector.

The voice of the Canadian residential construction industry, the CHBA supports its membership in keeping it up-to-date on news and updates of the industry’s regulatory environment. The CHBA represents more than 8,000 new home builders, renovators, land developers, trade contractors, material manufacturers, building suppliers, service professional and more across Canada.
