Global Mobile Launches Android Smartphone
Global Mobile Communications has today announced it is launching a DEWALT branded high-end, completely ruggedized smartphone to the Canadian market. The company’s experience combines deep insight into the large-scale construction industry with an intimate knowledge of innovative mobile technology. The result is the DEWALT MD501 Android smartphone: a dual-SIM 4G Android 6 (Marshmallow) rugged handset, presenting all the functionality of a high-performing smartphone, combined with a durable, robust design and specialised features for the trade professional. Designed to perform in a diverse range of working environments, the device is able to withstand the extremes of weather and outdoor working conditions associated with the region.
The MD501 is waterproof, dustproof and weatherproof, in line with the recognised industry standard IP68. The DEWALT ruggedized handset conforms to MIL-STD 810G, and is able to withstand up to two-metre drops onto solid concrete. Central and northern Canada experience sub-arctic and Arctic climates, where the temperature can drop below 20°C/4°F in sparsely populated areas. With an operating range of -20°C/-4°F to 60°C/140°F, the MD501 will withstand the tough Canadian winter conditions, ensuring connectivity for the user, regardless of their working environment. A five-inch screen comprised of HD Bright View Gorilla Toughened Glass 3 will endure the inevitable stresses that accompany daily jobsite use. The DEWALT MD501 has been rigorously tested to exacting industry standards and the harshest possible conditions. It is designed to exceed the expectations of even the most demanding construction professional.
Global Mobile is a leader in its field, and its expertise is evidenced by the rich feature-set of the MD501. Delivering high-end smartphone performance, the DEWALT device also boasts additional features intended to maximise end-user productivity, management and efficiency. The HD screen is compatible for use with gloves for maximum ease-of-use while on-site, and a 13MP rear camera is ideal for logging and recording jobsite conditions. Unlike many smartphones on the market, advanced battery technology provides up to 36 hours heavy usage and up to a week standby, designed to mitigate scenarios where a worker is left without connectivity which, working in rural locations, can easily prove a major safety concern. Wireless Qi charging provides a convenient means of charging the MD501, saving on the amount of cables the end-user has to travel with. As such the MD501 is fully compatible with all forms of wireless, cordless charging.
With many years’ experience of delivering mobile solutions for rugged outdoor and working environments, Global Mobile understands the needs of end-users, and the demands and potential dangers of working in this field. The MD501 is designed to address and mitigate these dangers, with features which support lone worker safety. The device has a pre-installed Lone Worker Protection App, which can be easily accessed using a side mounted function button and provides both an audible and text alarm, sending a worker’s GPS location and alert message to their manager or colleague. For workers in more treacherous conditions, who face the unpredictability of the Canadian weather and landscape, the accelerometer can be set, triggering an alarm if the user suffers a fall. In addition, the side mounted function button can be easily programmed to make Push-To-Talk calls allowing a manager to instantly communicate one-to-one or one-to-many, providing cohesion among lone workers based in disparate locations. These features are not only of benefit to the health and safety of the end-user, but can help ensure a business complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act in force in its territory.
The MD501 offers dual SIM capabilities, allowing even greater connectivity for all areas of a worker’s life, whether working in a rural location, or contacting friends and family out of hours. The dual 4G feature improves cellular coverage, allowing the user to switch networks, offering a potential solution to mobile blackspots with limited cellular coverage. An amplified loudspeaker provides increased ringtone volume and improved call clarity, designed to be heard above the high noise levels associated with large-scale construction sites.
Stephen Westley, Director of Global Mobile Communications, said, “As a working environment, the vast Canadian landscape throws up a number of potential hurdles. Limited cellular coverage, extreme weather, and vast territories all pose difficulties for the professional tradesperson, especially those working alone, or in remote areas. The DEWALT MD501 Android Smartphone offers the high-end performance of a market-leading device, combined with a robust, ruggedized build, and with additional features tailored to the needs of the DEWALT user working in this environment.”
