National Energy Board Being Terminated
CBJ — The federal government has announced it will scrap the National Energy Board and will instead look to streamline the approval process for major natural resources projects.
The change comes following years of criticism that the National Energy Board was ill-equipped to conduct proper environment assesments or to carry out duties on behalf of the Crown when consulting with Indigenous peoples. The NEB has been the official regulator that weighs approval for construction of projects such as pipelines.
The new agency will have set timelines for the review of projects — a maximum of 300 days — so that they can be carried out in a “timely manner.”
