Nemetz (S/A) & Associates Ltd.
William Nemetz started as an electrical contractor more than 50 years ago, and his son Arnold continued this legacy by founding the electrical engineering firm Arnold Nemetz & Associates in 1963. Steven Nemetz, the third generation of this family business, joined the firm in 1983 and continues to develop new competencies in specialized construction design services, pushing the firm towards new horizons in construction systems design.
“My grandfather William started Domino Electrical in the 1950s, and my father converted it into an electrical engineering firm in the early 1960s, and now we’ve progressed to be a multi-faceted firm – electrical, lighting, mechanical and plumbing. We want to provide the clients with the best coordinated set of documents. Each time you lower the number of consultants on a project you get better coordinated information. The clients are not sacrificing expertise because we have dedicated teams that operate at a very high level of knowledge and efficiency,” says Steven Nemetz.
To date, the firm has completed some 10,000 electrical engineering projects. As it continues to strive to provide unique and quality ingenuity services in electrical engineering and lighting design, thereby leads the way in designing functional and original systems for residential, commercial, and industrial projects in the Lower Mainland, B.C., and pursing new markets across Canada.
The Lucent Design Group, a division of Nemetz (S/A) & Associates, offers creative and practical lighting solutions with designers who are dedicated to creating a look that meets and enhances the client’s own unique vision. The lighting design pertains to quality, emphasizing the aesthetics, and functionality of the light. Simply put, it’s all about the experience you have with the “light”.
“We created Lucent Design Group because at that time the clients were using lighting suppliers or hired lighting designers, whose only concern was the conceptual aspect of the design. They were not concerned with constructability, availability or cost. All five of our designers are experts in regard to lighting design, and provide excellent coordination with the interior designers and the architects,” says Nemetz.
According to Nemetz, one of the big changes in this new phase of the company’s growth has been the advances towards energy efficiency. The City of Vancouver requires that every new building be LEED Gold certified, meaning that the lighting design calculations need to meet these requirements in regard to the Lighting Power Density. To meet these requirements, the team needs to consider all the aspects of lighting – the number of lights, the type of light fixtures, the lamp source and controls.
As a value added service, Lucent Design Group offers clients a fixture package with several options per fixture. This gives multiple suppliers the opportunity to compete which gives the builder the desired products for the best prices. It’s a win-win for all.
The firm’s projects have evolved over time, though the high-rise residential projects are the backbone of the business; the firm today provides engineering expertise in the construction of hotels, food stores, community centres, office towers, shopping centres, film studios, schools, and resorts.
To provide original, innovative, but also efficient and executable service, the firm hires specialists with extensive experience in their respective fields. Nemetz (S/A) & Associates brings over 50 years of design experience to the design table. Merging this extensive field industry experience with the firm’s design experience assures that Nemetz (S/A) & Associates delivers designs that are not just effective, but also constructible and economical. This blend of practicality and design is the main ingredient sought out by the firm’s clients.
With the expansion of its services, the firm has also expanded nationally. Nemetz (S/A) & Associates opened its Toronto office in November 2012 and is currently launching an office in Calgary. “The basis of our company is in building relationships with the developers and architects. Our strategy is to have one of our experienced designers from the Vancouver Office relocate to the Toronto or Calgary Offices to ensure that the Nemetz standards of design and quality are maintained throughout the company. “As a company we are looking forward to our growth in the future” concluded Nemetz.
