New York City Businesses Lose $70M Annually to Traffic
NEW YORK, NY–(Marketwired – December 13, 2017) – The Big Apple’s traffic congestion is increasing, costing businesses in the city an estimated $70M in productivity, this according to research conducted by TomTom.
The TomTom Traffic Index Report has found traffic in New York has increased overall travel times by 35 percent, with congestion extending the average drivers’ time spent on the road by 34 minutes.
Congested roads cost each of the 74,389 commercial light vehicle drivers in the city approximately $4.20 per day, adding up to a total of $70M of additional costs for New York’s business economy.
Torsten Grunzig, Director of Sales for TomTom Telematics North America, says, “Traffic congestion is a fact of life for every driver, in every city. New York is losing 42, 154 hours a day, and it’s only getting worse each year.”
“This year’s traffic congestion is at an all-time high,” says Grunzig. “Traffic congestion in New York has increased by 11% over the past eight years. It is costing businesses $312,780.95 daily in wages. Overcoming the congestion challenge and recapturing these lost hours and costs is a major challenge for the city’s businesses.”
The report has also found that Tuesday mornings (8am-9am) and Friday evening (5pm – 6pm) represent traffic peak hours.
