Ontario Ends Electric Vehicle Rebate Program

CBJ — Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that if he was elected Premier that he would make a lot of cuts to various programs. Whether you agree or disagree, he’s following through on many of his election promises. The latest victim is the cancellation of rebates for electric vehicles, which will assuredly have a direct impact on sales.

David Adams, president of the Global Automakers of Canada industry association, says that history shows that sales of electric vehicles take a hit when subsidies are removed, much like when British Columbia stopped and then restarted its program.

The Ontario provincial program offered up to $14,000 back for buyers, but the new government cancelled the rebate along with the cap-and-trade program that helped fund it as part of an effort to lower gasoline prices.

The Ford government has also cancelled an incentive program for electric vehicle charging stations that offered up to $1,000 to offset the cost of a home or office station.
