Ontario Power-less to Strike
CBJ — The Ontario provincial government has passed legislation to prevent a strike or lockout at a utility that generates about 50% of the province’s power. The Ford government says it simply cannot risk letting labour action disrupt the electricity supply.
Legislators were called back from the holiday break in an effort to end the labour dispute between the Power Workers’ Union and Ontario Power Generation. Premier Doug Ford, who has been largely absent from the legislature this week, was not present for the final vote on the bill.
The Progressive Conservative government says their bill will send the matter to arbitration so it can be resolved after months of deadlock between the two sides.
