Refinery Fire Isolated
CBJ — The fire caused by an explosion at a New Brunswick Irving Oil refinery has been contained. Officials say there is no risk to the rest of the facility, which is the largest in the country. It’s estimated that about 3,000 workers were on site at the time, but the incident resulted in only a few minor injuries.
The explosion occurred on Monday in Saint John, N.B. sending plumes of black smoke into the sky that could be seen for several kilometres.
“We regret that this incident has happened and are sorry for the impact that it has had on so many in our community,” Irving Oil wrote in the statement.
Irving Oil also said there will be no negative impact to the air quality in the area.
A full investigation is now under way.
