Ride-Hailing Services in B.C.
CBJ — Public ride-hailing services will soon become reality in British Columbia after the provincial government announced it will begin accepting applications in September. It’s expected the service will be available no later than the start of 2020.
Certain rules and regulations are already in place, including safety, insurance and penalty rules. Still to come is the amount drivers can charge as well as the number of vehicles that will be permitted on the roadways.
Annual inspections of ride-hailing vehicles and taxis are required if the vehicle has logged 40,000km or less in the previous year and vehicles with 40,000km or more in the previous year require semi-annual inspections. Drivers are required to complete criminal and driver record checks.
The two largest ride-hailing services throughout the world are currently Uber and Lyft.
