Suncor Cutting 400 Mining Driving Jobs
CBJ — About 400 jobs are likely to be lost as Suncor Energy oilsands mines in northern Alberta moves towards the use of driverless vehicles.
The company has been testing the 400-tonne capacity Komatsu trucks and already owns nine. The expectation is that Suncor will continue to build that field of driverless trucks over the next five to six years and use them at their site near Fort McMurray. During the transition period Suncor will likely hire temporary drivers.
Suncor is the first oilsands mining operation to adopt the technology with others expected to follow suit.
